pirate box update

A while ago I proposed a PirateBox for TeachMeet. Several folk (@nwinton, @carolinebreyley, @jdeyenberg, @owexelstein, @DavidDMuir, @dajbelshaw, @drewburrett, @parslad and @don_iain) responded to my plea for a fiver to help buy a router to act as a piratebox.

I was intending that the box should be launched at the Scottish Learning Festival TeachMeet tomorrow night.

Unfortunatly wanting the best value for money, when I bought the router on Amazon I failed to notice that it was shipping from the USA. I still expected it to arrive in time, especially as yesterday was talk like a pirate day, but it has not shown up.

I now hope the pirate box will sail at TeachMeet Strathclyde on Wednesday 26th October 2011.

Appoligies to all who expected to see the PB tomorrow evening.

The End: Cisco Shuts Down Flip, a $590 Million Mistake : Tech News and Analysis «

That’s because while Flip grew fast with its single purpose design, which managed to move millions of units, its continued growth was checked by the rise of smartphones that can increasingly shoot HD video while offering more wireless sharing options, something Flip’s camera’s never included, an irony for a networking company.

Lot of schools going to miss flips

At the apple store the iPhone table is deserted

At the apple store the iPhone table is deserted. There is a scrum round the iPad tables.
Outside a crowd are watching some buskers. Five folk are filming them: 2 iPhones, 1 iPod touch, 1 camera & a mobile phone.
I guess we have already got to the point where iPhone tech is boring and therefore what we do with it becomes interesting.

Here is what I know about hosting.

For several years I ran blogs at Sandaig Primary. The Web site  there was hosted by http://www.blacknight.co.uk/ who offered free hosting for primary schools. To use their hosting for blogging with wordpress you do need to pay for a database. Blacknight are very responsive and helpful. Originally I used another blogging software that did not need a database.

To run a blog on a hosting service you need to do a wee bit of work, installing Wordpress and setting it up. You need to keep an eye out for security updates and be able to use FTP software and follow instructions. A wee bit of knowledge about how web stuff, html ect might help.

Alternatively you can use a blogging service. for many years edublogs.org has provide a service for free. They now charge but provide free with advert blogs.

In the UK John Sutton (HGJohn) provides blogs for schools as does John McLear (johnmclear) I've not used either of their services but heard good things about both.

In Scotland we are luck enough to have wordpress blogs supplied by Glow, this is in its infancy but is looking very good so far.

creativity

I can't recall exactly what was said at TeachEat but I have a sense that a lot of keynoters at conference mention creativity as being very important with out really tying down how you can engender it in the classroom. I've often seen how to recognise it, or how it is crushed.

In the classroom I think the best I could do is be open to allowing learners to follow creative leaps. I can't design for creativity. I need to plan for something more basic (fun, learning etc) and hope I don't squash creative moments when they arise. I know I've missed these moments in the past as well as occasionally let them flourish.
